More Nature Day Photos
from Gene Stratton-Porter's Limberlost in Geneva, Indiana
Here's the back of the cabin, with a strange round structure to the left. Despite all the jokes, it isn't an outhouse; it's a smokehouse, made from a large sycamore trunk, located just outside the kitchen. There are two bedrooms to the right side of this view.
Doesn't the cabin look spiffy in its new coat of paint? You can see how badly it needs roofing. The state has no money for that right now. At least it doesn't leak -- yet.
This east side of the cabin is so sheltered, so private. Jeannette's bedroom is to the left, out of the picture. The big window is the music room. Peeking out from the porch post is the big side window in the living room. Upstairs are the museum shop, storage and offices.
This charming porch opens off Jeannette's bedroom at the southeast corner of the house. There must have been many tea parties with her dolls, here in this bower.
Is this a ghost? When my flash doesn't go off, my computer can still pull a picture out of whatever darkness is on my disk. In this case, it found the music room fireplace, surrounded by lincrusta on the lower part of the walls. The mirror appears to have an image of a young woman in a straw hat, bending her head sideways as she looks into the mirror. I pretend to myself that it is the image of Jeannette, looking to see what the "grownups" are doing today.
Imagination plays a big part in enjoying Gene Stratton-Porter's books, but if you want some theatre, you can buy several videos in the museum shop.

This poster for a Gene Stratton-Porter movie is framed in the dining room.
Gene's photo of Jeannette with Geneva's father, Reverend Porter, who ignited Gene's interest in nature.
